077 – Half Size Me: How one tragic event inspired Karen to lose 72 pounds

077_ImageIn this episode of Half Size Me, Heather interviews Karen, who lost 72 pounds after three previous attempts at major weight loss were unsuccessful.

However, it took one tragic event to really inspire Karen to change her mindset about health.

And now she’s ready to inspire you with her story.

You can connect with Karen or learn more about her journey at her blog, Garden Girl.

Karen’s Bio (from her About page): “… I have been overweight on and off since I was about six. I’m now 47.

I’ve had 3 major weight losses. I respond best to structured weight loss programs… I did re-gain much of my weight after the first two attempts. I learned a lot during the attempts and I brought what works with me for the third attempt…

The major difference this time around, what made weight maintenance work, was taking a good look at what the “root” causes of my habits were. I then take both corrective action and preventive action so that I have a healthier habit to use the next time around. I use that approach if I start to regain. You’ll see me writing this way. I also use graphs and sometimes track my food to check my carbs from time to time. It is just the scientist in me (my real life career).  It works for me so I go with it.

Life is dynamic; I will never be done with the process. Changes in life, work, age, and my health will mean that I will have to address weight maintenance day in day out.   I will always need to work on myself, be mindful of what has worked in the past, and to be open to what I’ll need to do in the future.

This week’s quote:

It takes but one positive thought when given a chance to survive and thrive to overpower an entire army of negative thoughts.” — Robert H. Schuller

Negative thoughts stick around because we believe them, not because we want them or choose them.” — Andrew Bernstein

In this episode, you’ll hear Karen share

— why she removed grains and processed sugar from her diet

— what it took to change her outlook on relationships since losing weight

— how she balances her carb intake and eating paleo

— and much more!

    Hi Heather,

I always love the interviews. Also, on this episode, you talked about changing our stories. You gave the example of “I am not a runner” changing to “I CAN run.” I blogged about one of the ways I want to change my story and wanted to share that with you since your podcast inspired this post. Thanks so much!
